I experienced that same struggle while working on my own science fiction novel, Fulfilling a Vow: Searching for Answers.
I wasn't running out of ideas. I wasn't losing interest.
I simply couldn't understand why some scenes worked while others didn't.
That frustration led me to ask one question that would ultimately shape everything that followed.

Searching for the Answer
I immersed myself in books on storytelling, outlining, scene structure, dialogue, pacing, and character development.
I learned from respected teachers, including Rayne Hall, whose work on scene types broadened my perspective, and although he never knew it, I considered R.A. Salvatore my unrequited mentor for writing compelling action scenes.
Every resource taught valuable lessons.
Yet one thing remained missing.
Most books explained how to write. Very few explained why individual scenes succeed.
Regardless of genre, I began noticing that strong scenes shared common principles. The setting changed. The genre changed. The characters changed. But the underlying mechanics remained remarkably consistent.
Building a Methodology
Rather than collecting isolated writing techniques, I began organizing storytelling into a practical framework centered around the smallest unit of every story:
The scene.
Each scene became something that could be understood, planned, evaluated, and strengthened through a repeatable process.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by an entire novel, I learned to focus on making one scene stronger than the last. As each scene improved, the story naturally became stronger.
Writing no longer felt like guessing. It became intentional.
Most importantly… it became enjoyable again.

Originally, Mastering Your Scenes was never intended to become a published book. It was something I created for myself. A working system. A reference guide. A practical framework that helped me organize my own writing process.
The more I refined it, the more other writers responded to it.
